Jalisco

Jalisco Tours: Where Tequila and Mariachi Were Born

Welcome to Jalisco, the state that gave Mexico both mariachi music and tequila, stretching from Guadalajara's colonial center to Puerto Vallarta's Pacific coastline. We'll get you past the souvenir shops and into agave country, artisan workshops, and the mountain towns most coastal itineraries never reach.

The Birthplace of Two Mexican Icons

Jalisco is where mariachi music and tequila both originated, and neither one is a footnote here. They're built into daily life. In the town of Tequila itself, blue agave fields recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage landscape surround distilleries open for tours and tastings, while Guadalajara hosts an annual International Mariachi and Charrería Festival that draws performers from across Mexico and beyond.

Jalisco for Every Kind of Traveler

Start in Guadalajara's Centro Histórico, anchored by its neo-gothic cathedral and the UNESCO-listed Instituto Cultural Cabañas. In Tlaquepaque, don't just shop the ceramics workshops and artisan markets. Book time with a master artisan and try the techniques yourself, then stop by a family candy shop to see how rompope, marzipan, and cajeta are actually made. If you want tequila country beyond the big brand names, a small family-owned distillery near Teuchitlán pairs a tasting with a visit to the Guachimontones, circular pyramids found nowhere else in Mexico. For something more hands-on, spend a morning practicing rope work and handling cattle alongside working charros on a working ranch outside the city. On the coast, Puerto Vallarta's Malecón and Zona Romántica meet Banderas Bay, where humpback whales migrate in from December through March. And if you want to slow all the way down, Lake Chapala or the pine forests around Mazamitla, nicknamed "Mexican Switzerland," will do it.

From Agave Fields to the Pacific Coast

Guadalajara sets the pace for most Jalisco itineraries. Its colonial core is built around Plaza de Armas and the neoclassical Teatro Degollado, with the sprawling Mercado Libertad nearby for local food and crafts in one stop. A short drive out, Tequila's agave landscape and open-air distilleries turn a single afternoon into a full introduction to Mexico's national spirit.

On the coast, Puerto Vallarta trades colonial architecture for a palm-lined boardwalk and cobblestone hillside streets. Banderas Bay draws whale watchers in winter and snorkelers year-round at the Marietas Islands, while inland, Lake Chapala and the mountain town of Mazamitla offer a cooler, slower version of Jalisco most coastal visitors never see.

Must-Visit Spots

Jalisco runs from agave fields to the Pacific coast. This is where we'd send you.

Guadalajara's Centro Histórico. The colonial core of Jalisco's capital, anchored by the neo-gothic cathedral, Teatro Degollado, and the UNESCO-listed Instituto Cultural Cabañas.

Tequila and the Guachimontones. The town that gave the spirit its name, best paired with a small family-owned distillery near Teuchitlán and the circular pyramids of the Guachimontones nearby.

Tlaquepaque's Artisan Workshops. A Pueblo Mágico just outside Guadalajara where you can apprentice with master ceramicists for an afternoon instead of just browsing the markets.

Puerto Vallarta's Malecón and Zona Romántica. A palm-lined oceanfront promenade on Banderas Bay, backing onto the beach neighborhood of Zona Romántica and Playa Los Muertos.
