Welcome to Campeche: Mexico's only surviving walled colonial city, ringed by more than 800 meters of stone rampart built to keep pirates out, and the quiet gateway to some of the country's most remote Maya ruins. Rutopía takes you from pastel streets inside the wall to jungle temples hours away by dirt road, plus the mangrove lagoons and cenotes most itineraries skip entirely.
San Francisco de Campeche is the only remaining walled city in Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage site built after repeated 17th-century pirate raids left the port defenseless. Twin gates, the Puerta de Tierra and Puerta de Mar, still anchor the old wall, along with seven original bastions, three batteries, and two forts. Walk Calle 59, the pastel-colored street connecting both gates, and you're tracing the same defensive perimeter that once kept Campeche's Spanish colonists safe.
Spend a few days inside the walled city, then push further into Campeche's jungle interior for Calakmul, a UNESCO-listed Maya capital deep in a biosphere reserve with far fewer visitors than Chichén Itzá. Near the site, the community of El Hormiguero manages its own patch of jungle, and its guides can take you hiking, biking, or camping through it, no outside tour operator involved. Continue on to Edzná, occupied for over 2,000 years, and the smaller sites of Chicanná and Becán near Xpujil, where the community of November 20 teaches traditional handicraft techniques and holds the only access to the restricted Río Bec ruins. If you'd rather head for water than jungle, Isla Aguada's mangrove lagoon delivers dolphin sightings and a bird island home to the Jabiru stork, with a fishing village as your starting point. And don't leave without trying shrimp, the state's defining ingredient, prepared coconut-battered, garlic-fried, or folded into Pan de Cazón.
Inside Campeche City's walls, colonial architecture and Caribbean color meet at every turn: arcaded plazas, fortified gates, and a historic center small enough to explore on foot in a few days. It's a quieter, less crowded counterpart to Mérida, with the same colonial bones and a fraction of the visitors.
Outside the city, the state turns into dense jungle hiding some of the Maya world's most significant sites. Calakmul's pyramids rise out of a biosphere reserve that's home to jaguars and howler monkeys as much as ruins. Closer to the coast, Cenote Miguel Colorado drops nearly 80 meters into dark green water, and Isla Aguada's protected lagoon draws visitors for dolphins and birdlife instead of beaches.
Campeche pairs a walled colonial capital with some of Mexico's most remote Maya sites, and a few communities you won't find on a generic itinerary. Here's where to begin your trip.
San Francisco de Campeche's Walled Historic Center. Mexico's only surviving walled city, with 800+ meters of intact rampart, twin fortified gates, and colonial streets built to withstand pirate attacks.
Calakmul and El Hormiguero. A UNESCO World Heritage Maya capital deep in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, where the community of El Hormiguero leads hikes, biking, and jungle camping along its edge.
Edzná and November 20. Occupied for over 2,000 years and anchored by the Temple of the Five Stories, near the community of November 20, whose handicraft workshops and exclusive access to the Río Bec ruins go well beyond the standard circuit.
Isla Aguada and Laguna de Términos. A protected coastal lagoon known for bottlenose dolphin sightings, toured with guides from the fishing village on its shore.

Embark on a 13-day journey through Mexico, exploring ancient pyramids, vibrant street art, rich cultural traditions, and savoring exquisite local flavors from bustling markets to renowned vineyards.
